the importance of play

FOR ALL PEOPLE

About

Playful Pittsburgh is an initiative dedicated to advancing the importance of play in the lives of children, families, and communities in the Pittsburgh region by:

  • Raising awareness that play is a critical element in the lives of people of all ages

  • Educating decision-makers (from parents to legislators) in our region so that their choices support access to play for people of all ages

  • Modeling (and inspiring) through various activities the actions we hope our broader community will take in their daily lives

RESOURCES

Initiatives in Hazelwood

A playful mind and body are critical elements in the lives of people of all ages. Developing since 2015, The Hazelwood Play Trail (HPT) raises awareness around the benefits of play while engaging the public with the Hazelwood Neighborhood’s unique elements. The HPT continues to develop as a project promoting unconventional play-based learning. It is a pathway of playful elements showcasing the benefits and forms of play. The trail allows for multi-generational and public use, play advocacy events, community engagement activities, and educational purposes. The HPT creates space for people to gather and share ideas while engaging with the community and making new connections and memories.

Play Stops include the Elizabeth Street Mural and Parklet, Dylamato’s Market, the Spartan Center, Lytle Land, and The Three Rivers School Garden (formerly the YGarden).

Play can happen anywhere and under any circumstance, so instead of making play a "destination," we hope the Hazelwood Play Trail makes play part of the community's daily routine by providing "play-on-the-way" opportunities. No matter where you go, you can play.
